Indoor Air Quality in Your Home What Causes Indoor Air Problems? A glossary and a list of organizations where you can get additional information are available in this document. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to help you decide whether to take actions that can reduce the level of indoor air pollution in your own home.īecause so many Americans spend a lot of time in offices with mechanical heating, cooling, and ventilation systems, there is also a short section on the causes of poor air quality in offices and what you can do if you suspect that your office may have a problem. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. This safety guide was prepared by the U.S. Fortunately, there are steps that most people can take both to reduce the risk from existing sources and to prevent new problems from occurring. ![]() There can be a serious risk from the cumulative effects of these sources. While pollutant levels from individual sources may not pose a significant health risk by themselves, most homes have more than one source that contributes to indoor air pollution. Such groups include the young, the elderly, and the chronically ill, especially those suffering from respiratory or cardiovascular disease. ![]() In addition, people who may be exposed to indoor air pollutants for the longest periods of time are often those most susceptible to the effects of indoor air pollution. Thus, for many people, the risks to health may be greater due to exposure to air pollution indoors than outdoors. Other research indicates that people spend approximately 90 percent of their time indoors. In the last several years, a growing body of scientific evidence has indicated that the air within homes and other buildings can be more seriously polluted than the outdoor air in even the largest and most industrialized cities. Indoor air pollution is one risk that you can do something about. And some are risks we might decide to avoid if we had the opportunity to make informed choices. Some we choose to accept because to do otherwise would restrict our ability to lead our lives the way we want. Driving in cars, flying in planes, engaging in recreational activities, and being exposed to environmental pollutants all pose varying degrees of risk. Introduction Indoor Air Quality ConcernsĪll of us face a variety of risks to our health as we go about our day-to-day lives. Following the advice given will not necessarily provide complete protection in all situations or against all health hazards that may be caused by indoor air pollution. Information provided in this safety guide is based on current scientific and technical understanding of the issues presented and is reflective of the jurisdictional boundaries established by the statutes governing the co-authoring agencies.

Filing this form will allow the injured spouse to request that he or she receive an appropriate allocation of the refund owed for overpayment of taxes from a jointly filed tax return, rather than allowing them to be used to cover past-due taxes owed by the other spouse. Jamie doesn't usually receive a refund because the IRS garnishes any tax overpayments to cover his past-due student loans. It continues to use two parallel CR2032 cells. The calculator's part number and physical appearance didn't change except for a "Rev 2" plate on the bottom side. The internal hardware of the HP-12C changed again in 2015, when the design switched to use an Atmel ATSAM4LC2CA-AU processor with ARM Cortex-M4 core. In contrast to the preceding revision, it supported two parallel CR2032 cells, of which only one was necessary to run the calculator.īased on the same processor, a limited HP 12c 30th Anniversary Edition (NW258AA) was introduced in 2011. This version (F2230A) was colloquially known as the " HP-12C+", although HP did not market it as a different product. The calculator ran 60-90 times faster on most benchmark operations. HP also released a software development kit (SDK), making it possible to make new and custom operating systems. This has brought advanced possibilities such as flashing new firmware, not previously possible. In 2008, HP modified the design to use an Atmel AT91SAM7L128 processor with ARM7TDMI core running a software emulator of the previous Nut processor, written by Cyrille de Brébisson, in order to execute an image of the former Nut-based firmware in it. In 2001 (from serial number CN11500001 ), the CPU was changed to a 3 V process ( Agilent 2AF1-0001, later a Marvell 2AF1-0002 ) and the battery was therefore changed to a single CR2032 cell replacing the three LR44 cells previously used (F1637A). However, HP's market research found in the late 1980s that users did not trust results obtained too quickly and so the CPU speed was never improved from the original 884 kHz, but the speed could be increased by a user modification. Over its lifespan, the proprietary CMOS HP Nut (originally the 1LF5, then 1LM2) processor's technology has been redesigned to integrate all the circuitry into a single chip (first the 1LQ9, then 1RR2) and to refresh the manufacturing process (as the foundry could no longer manufacture the necessary chips, having moved on to making higher-density chips). There were at least eight hardware revisions of the HP-12C since 1981 (including one special issue). The 1977 October edition of the HP Journal contains an article by Roy Martin, the inventor of the simple method of operation used in HP financial calculators, which describes, in detail, the mathematics and functionality built by William Kahan and Roy Martin that is still used today. Its popularity has endured despite a relatively simple but iterative process such as amortizing the interest over the life of a loan, a calculation that modern spreadsheets can complete almost instantly, can take over a minute with the HP-12C. Due to its simple operation for key financial calculations, the calculator long ago became the de facto standard among financial professionals. The HP-12C is HP's longest and best-selling product, in continual production since its introduction in 1981. Critics claim that its 1980s technology is antiquated, but proponents point out that it is still the de facto and de jure in high finance. ![]() with newer revisions moving to an ARM processor running a software emulator of the original Nut processor. He’s more than capable at bringing an emotional complexity to a character most aptly described as a dude-in-distress. Likewise, Pine matches her hopefulness with a world weariness and sharp sense of humor. She evokes a classic heroism that is a breath of fresh air and nods to Christopher Reeve’s approach to Superman from the 1970s. ![]() Most importantly, she wears her suit, the suit doesn’t wear her. Gadot wonderfully inhabits the mix of curiosity, sincerity, badassery, and compassion that has undergirded Wonder Woman since the beginning. Having said that, while “Wonder Woman” has a lot to offer visually, what makes this film so captivating is Gal Gadot and Chris Pine. Similarly, the history of the Amazons, told in a dense but beautifully rendered backstory by Hippolyta, evokes a painterly quality reminiscent of Caravaggio. Jenkins films many of these scenes in wide shot, reveling in the majestic nature of this culture. The scenes set in Themyscira have a dazzling array of colors including the gold of armor, the cerulean blue of the sea that surrounds them, warm creams, and deep browns. It’s free of the Hellenic influence you’d expect from a story that takes such inspiration from Greek myth with the Amazons creating their home in a way that respects the lush nature around them rather than destroying it. Diana leaves behind the only life she’s ever known, heading to late 1910s London to stop the war she believes is influenced by the god Ares.Ĭinematographer Matthew Jensen, production designer Aline Bonetto, and costume designer Lindy Hemming form Themyscira into a gorgeous utopia that utilizes a variety of cultural touchstones. Even a man like Captain Steve Trevor (an endlessly charming Chris Pine), who brings news of World War I when he crash-lands on the island disrupting this all-female sanctuary, gets saved by her. She grows from a kind, young girl into an inquisitive, brave, young woman who never hesitates to helps those in need. But Diana longs to be trained in the art of war by her aunt, Antiope (a stellar Robin Wright). No Amazon is fiercer or more protective than her mother, Queen Hippolyta ( Connie Nielsen). As a young girl, Diana enjoys the loving protection of the Amazons of Themyscira, a secluded island paradise created by the gods of Olympus. Written by Allan Heinberg, with a story also by Zack Snyder and Jason Fuchs, the story uses a variety of inspiration culled from Wonder Woman’s 76-year history. It’s inspiring, evocative, and, unfortunately, a bit infuriating for the chances it doesn’t take. It is a sincerely good film in which no qualifiers are needed. In turn, “Wonder Woman” isn’t just a good superhero film. But more often than not she wears a bright, open smile that carries the optimism and hope that is true to the character’s long history as well as a much-needed salve from what other blockbusters offer. At times, her face is inquisitive, morose, and marked by fury. Through moments of quiet verisimilitude and blistering action sequences, Jenkins’ gaze often wisely returns to the face of her lead heroine, Diana ( Gal Gadot). It wasn’t the glimmer of a blade or even the picturesque shores of Themyscira, the utopian paradise Wonder Woman calls home. But early in the film I noticed the terrain that director Patty Jenkins turned to most often in order to create the emotional through-line. It’s arguably easier to sell Wonder Woman as a vengeful heroine in the vein of countless others, but less distinctive. As a longtime Wonder Woman fan, I worried her distinctive edges would be sanded off when it came time for her standalone film. |
